چکیده
Course Description In this course, we will focus on artificial intelligence for mobile robots. You will be programming Pioneer robots using Pyro (Python for robots). These robots have a fixed sensor set and fixed sensor placement – the course will be more of a software course than a hardware course. Topics to be covered during the course include robot architectures, vision (including color vision processing, edge detection, and optical flow), machine learning (including reinforcement learning and neural networks), mapping and localization, and multi-agent robotics. We will also read research papers during the term. Links to these papers will be placed on the course web site.

Shaping robot behavior using principles from instrumental conditioning
Shaping by successive approximations is an important animal training technique in which behavior is gradually adjusted in response to strategically timed reinforcements. We describe a computational model of this shaping process and its implementation on a mobile robot. Innate behaviors in our model are sequences of actions and enabling conditions, and shaping is a behavior editing process reali...
متن کاملA Novel Multimode Mobile Robot with Adaptable Wheel Geometry for Maneuverability Improvement
In this paper, an innovative mobile platform is presented which is equipped by three new wheels. The core of the new idea is to establish a new design of rigid circular structure which can be implemented as a wheel by variable radius. The structure of wheel includes a circular pattern of a simple two-link mechanism assembled to obtain a wheel shape. Each wheel has two degrees of freedom. The fi...
متن کاملSpatial Navigation Principles: Applications to Mobile Robotics
Human navigational principles are researched and applied to mobile robotic applications. Two principles, constant optical rate and angular constancy, can be used by a elder or mobile robot to de ne a trajectory for interception of a projectile without knowledge of the ball's or elder's world coordinates. Two novel, robust, viewer-centered algorithms, a passive and an active version, are modeled...
متن کاملAUTOMATICA BOOK REVIEW Computational Principles of Mobile Robotics
A practicing engineer involved in a mobile robotics project, specially if he or she must integrate a, say, automated manufacturing system rather than designing the robotic devices, is supposed to pose certain questions: Is a positioning system like GPS suitable for an indoor manufacturing system?, Is the state-of the art in computer vision suitable for my needs, or even affordable?. Answers to ...
متن کاملGADEN: A 3D Gas Dispersion Simulator for Mobile Robot Olfaction in Realistic Environments
This work presents a simulation framework developed under the widely used Robot Operating System (ROS) to enable the validation of robotics systems and gas sensing algorithms under realistic environments. The framework is rooted in the principles of computational fluid dynamics and filament dispersion theory, modeling wind flow and gas dispersion in 3D real-world scenarios (i.e., accounting for...
